It was the fall of 1943 in a small village just outside Amsterdam. Strict occupying guards had taken over the country for three long years. Uniforms were everywhere, checkpoints blocked the roads, and unfair signs hung on shop doors. The air always felt heavy with worry.

The main character was a 15-year-old girl named Lina. She rode a rusty old bicycle everywhere she went. Lina's father had been part of the secret resistance before he was taken away. Now, her mother mended clothes, and Lina looked after her 10-year-old brother, Thomas.

On the surface, Lina was just a newspaper delivery girl. But secretly, she was a brave courier for the resistance. Her job was simple but very dangerous: hide tiny notes inside folded newspapers and deliver them to secret meeting points. Every time she rode out, her heart pounded like a drum.

Lina's best friend was 16-year-old Jan. He was tall, wore round glasses, and looked like a quiet bookworm who worked at the library. But Jan had a secret too. His own family had been taken away long ago, and he wanted to help others escape the same fate.

Jan was the resistance's 'forger.' At night, he worked in a hidden basement with stolen stamps and paper. He carefully made fake identity cards and travel permits to help families in danger escape to safety.

Lina and Jan often met by an abandoned canal. She would park her bicycle under an old stone bridge, and Jan would slip out from the bushes to meet her. They always exchanged their important information in quiet whispers.

'Three new permits today,' Jan said softly one evening. 'For a family in danger. You need to take them to the baker in the south part of the village.' Lina nodded, knowing how important this delivery was.

Lina carefully slipped the papers into a secret compartment hidden inside her bicycle bell. 'I'll go tonight. Be careful, Jan,' she whispered. 'The guards are searching everywhere.' Jan pushed his glasses up. 'I know. But if we stop, they win.'

One day, Lina received a very urgent mission. The resistance learned that the guards planned to take away the last remaining children in the village the following week. They had to organize a rescue immediately. But the usual routes were blocked by checkpoints.

Lina bit her lip. 'I'll do it. Jan, you make the fake papers. I'll deliver the message. Together, we'll save them.' Jan hesitated. 'It's too risky, Lina. You're only fifteen...' Lina looked straight at him. 'You're only sixteen. We're not children anymore. We're resisters.'

That night, the moon hid behind thick clouds. Lina rode out on her bicycle. Her basket held innocent-looking newspapers, but underneath lay a hand-drawn map of the escape route. The note read, 'Tonight at 10 p.m. Old mill. Bring the children.'

She avoided the main road, but suddenly, lights flashed ahead! A patrol of guards with flashlights blocked the way. 'Stop! Inspection!' an officer shouted. Lina's heart jumped into her throat. She squeezed the brakes, trying to think quickly.

Lina pretended to be scared. 'Please, sir... I'm just delivering newspapers. My mother is sick.' As the officer reached for her basket, she pulled a small piece of stolen chocolate from her pocket. 'Sir, are you hungry? Please take this, I need to get home.'

The guards laughed, took the chocolate, and waved her through. Lina pedaled away, finally breathing again. She reached the back door of the bakery and knocked—three long taps, two short. The baker opened the door, took the map, and whispered, 'Good work, child. Tomorrow we move.'

But the danger wasn't over. On her way home, Lina saw something that made her freeze: Jan was being marched down the street by two guards! His glasses were crooked. Someone had betrayed his secret printing room. Lina hid in a dark alley, tears streaming down her face.

Illustration for: A Hard Choice

Lina ran to find an older resistance member. The woman looked pale. 'We have to save him, but tonight's rescue of the children is more important... Lina, you have to choose.' Lina wiped her eyes. 'Save the children first. Jan would say: One falls, but the rest keep going.'

That night, the rescue worked perfectly. More than a dozen children were quietly led to the old mill and taken onto small boats to safety. Lina rode ahead on her bicycle, scouting for patrols. Jan's fake papers saved every single one of them.

The next morning, Jan was sent away to a prison camp. Lina stood in the crowd at the village square, watching as Jan was pushed onto a truck. He looked up, saw her, and gave a small smile. His lips moved silently: 'Keep riding...'

Lina cried, but she didn't stop. She kept delivering messages through shadows and checkpoints. Months later, the war finally turned. In May 1945, the village was liberated! Flags flew everywhere, and the dark days were over.

Jan survived the camps and found Lina again. They grew up to rebuild their country. 'Thank you for not stopping,' Jan told her. 'Your bicycle carried away the darkness.' Lina smiled. 'No, we rode it together. We delivered hope.'
