1.The Long Walk Home
Toby walked home slowly from school. His green backpack felt heavier than usual after a very long day of learning and play.
He finally reached his front door. Toby was so tired that he could hardly wait to drop his heavy bag and find a big dinner.
Inside, the house was very quiet. Toby's stomach gave a loud rumble, reminding him that he hadn't eaten since lunchtime.
He hurried to the kitchen and stood before the big, shiny refrigerator. He imagined a delicious feast waiting for him inside.
But when he opened the door, the shelves were bare. There wasn't a single snack, a piece of fruit, or even a carton of milk left.
Toby checked the tall wooden cupboards next, but they were empty too. He felt a little bit sad and very, very tired.
Since there was no dinner to be found, Toby decided the best thing to do was rest. He walked down the quiet hallway toward his room.
He reached his bedroom and shut the door firmly behind him. He was ready for this long, hungry day to finally be over.
He quickly changed into his favorite soft pajamas. The stars on his night lamp began to glow softly in the dark room.
Toby climbed into bed and fell fast asleep. Soon, he was dreaming of giant sandwiches and tall glasses of cold milk.
