In a small cottage surrounded by ivy and daisies lived a kind, lonely woman. She longed for a child of her own, small enough to hold in her hand. One day, a good fairy gave her a magic barley seed. When she planted it, a beautiful tulip bloomed — and inside the golden petals sat a tiny girl, no bigger than a thumb. The woman named her Thumbelina.

Thumbelina slept in a walnut shell bed, with violet petals as her blanket and a rose leaf as her mattress. She sang with crickets and danced on lily pads at dawn. Her laughter was as light as wind chimes, and even butterflies came to listen.

One night, as the moon rose silver and silent, a greedy old toad crept into the cottage. She saw Thumbelina and whispered, “What a perfect bride for my son!” Before dawn, the toad carried her away to a pond and placed her on a water lily in the middle of the water.

The toad’s son croaked in delight from the muddy shore. Thumbelina wept softly, watching dragonflies shimmer above her. But kind fishes, hearing her tears, nibbled through the stem of the lily pad — setting her free to float down the stream.

The current carried her past tall reeds and sleeping frogs. A white butterfly fluttered by, and she tied her ribbon around its chest to let it pull her like a tiny boat. The world was vast and full of light.

Suddenly, a large beetle swooped down and seized her! He took her to his high tree branch and showed her off to the other beetles. But they mocked her delicate wings and said she looked too strange. Ashamed, the beetle left her alone on a leaf.

Thumbelina lived among the trees through summer and autumn. She drank dew from flowers and wove clothes from grass. When winter came, snowflakes fell like stars, and she had nowhere to hide from the cold.

Freezing and trembling, she found a tiny hole under a hedge — the home of a field mouse. The kind mouse gave her food and a warm bed in exchange for stories and songs.

The mouse introduced Thumbelina to her wealthy neighbor, a mole who lived in darkness. The mole admired her voice and decided he would marry her, though she dreaded his gloomy tunnels.

One day, while walking with the mole, Thumbelina found a swallow lying motionless in the passage. Moved with pity, she cared for him through the cold months, warming him with petals and whispering songs.

When spring returned, the swallow regained his strength. “Come with me, dear Thumbelina,” he said. But she could not yet leave — the mouse expected her wedding to the mole. The swallow kissed her hand and flew away into the light.

Soon the wedding day came. Thumbelina wept as the mole led her through his dark halls. But at the moment she saw a ray of sun through the tunnel, she ran toward it — her heart bursting with hope.

Outside, the swallow was waiting! He took her on his back, and they soared high over forests and lakes, through the golden air of spring. Thumbelina laughed for the first time in a long while.

The swallow gently set Thumbelina on a soft petal at the garden’s edge. Every flower swayed as if greeting her, colors brighter than she had ever seen. She wandered carefully, her tiny feet brushing dew, feeling a hum of gentle life all around. Petals lifted lightly under her touch, and the air shimmered with the scent of a hundred blossoms. For the first time, the world seemed both vast and tender, welcoming her small, brave heart.

Every flower stood open to the sky, as if listening. On the tallest bloom waited a tiny prince, no bigger than Thumbelina. He listened as she told her story—and did not interrupt. When she finished, he did not tell her who she should be. “Stay,” he said gently.

Thumbelina stepped onto the flower beside him. The petals were warm beneath her feet—steady as earth, light as air. For the first time, she did not feel small in a wide world. She felt exactly the right size. And in the quiet music of the garden, she understood: not that she had been rescued, but that she had arrived.
