A proud princess lived in a tall castle tower with twelve windows, ruling her kingdom. She declared that any suitor wishing to marry her must hide so well she couldn't find him. If discovered, he would fail the challenge and be sent away from the kingdom in disgrace. Ninety-seven men had already failed her test.

Three brothers arrived to try their luck. The eldest hid but was quickly found and failed the challenge. The second brother also failed. The youngest brother, kind and clever, begged the princess for three chances, and she reluctantly agreed.

The Youngest Brother went hunting and found a crow trapped in a net. He gently freed it, and the grateful crow promised to help him. For his first hiding attempt, the crow magically transformed him into an egg, placing him among others. But the Princess, looking from her eleventh window, still found him. The crow was punished for helping.

Continuing his journey, the Youngest Brother saw a fish caught in a net in a sparkling pond. He freed it, and the fish promised to help him in return. For his second attempt, the fish swallowed him, hiding him deep underwater. Yet, the Princess, looking from her twelfth window, still found him. The fish, too, was punished.

For his final chance, the Youngest Brother found a fox caught in a trap. He immediately freed the clever creature, and the fox promised its help. 'For your last hiding,' the fox whispered, 'you must become a sea-hare. I will disguise myself as a merchant and sell you to the princess. She will never find you!'

Following the fox's instructions, the Youngest Brother transformed into a small, magical sea-hare. The fox, now cleverly disguised as a traveling merchant, placed the sea-hare gently into a basket. Together, they made their way to the castle, ready for the final, most cunning hiding attempt.

The princess bought the beautiful sea-hare from the merchant-fox, never suspecting it was her suitor. She searched from each of her twelve castle windows, peering intently into every corner of the courtyard and gardens. But no matter how hard she looked, the Youngest Brother, hidden as the sea-hare, remained invisible to her.

Furious at her inability to find him, the Princess angrily threw the little sea-hare out of the castle window. But as it landed in the courtyard, the fox, no longer disguised, appeared. With a magical flourish, the fox revealed the truth and restored the Youngest Brother to his human form before the Princess's astonished eyes.

The Youngest Brother returned to the Princess, who now understood his incredible cleverness and courage. Admiring his wit, she realized he was the perfect match for her. Her heart softened, and the Princess asked the Youngest Brother to be her husband. He gladly agreed, and the kingdom erupted in joyous celebration.

The Youngest Brother and the Princess ruled the kingdom together with fairness and wisdom. The clever fox was honored for its loyalty and cunning, remaining a trusted companion. Every spring, beautiful flowers bloomed in the castle gardens, and sunlight sparkled from the towers, reminding everyone that kindness to animals, cleverness, and courage are always wonderfully rewarded.
