Once upon a time, a young prince longed to marry a true princess. He wanted someone truly royal, not just in title, but in heart and spirit.
He traveled across mountains and seas, through grand castles and small cottages, meeting many princesses along the way. But none of them felt quite right for him.
After many journeys, the prince returned home. His fine horse was dusty, and his heart felt heavy with disappointment. He sat by a palace window, watching the rain.
That very night, thunder rolled across the sky. Rain poured down in silver sheets, and lightning flashed over the palace towers. Everyone hurried to close the windows.
Suddenly, amidst the storm, there came a loud knock at the palace gate. The kind King himself went to open the great wooden door, surprised by the late visitor.
There stood a young girl, soaked from head to toe, her hair dripping and her simple dress clinging to her. “I am a princess,” she said softly. “May I come in from the rain?”
The Queen raised an eyebrow. “A princess, you say? We shall see about that,” she whispered to herself. She smiled kindly at the girl, but her mind was already planning a clever test.
While servants brought warm towels and cocoa for the guest, the Queen went to a royal bedroom. She carefully placed a single, tiny green pea in the very middle of the bed.
Then, she ordered twenty soft mattresses and twenty fluffy feather quilts. One by one, they were piled high on top of the tiny pea, creating an enormous, towering bed.
When the princess entered the room, she looked up in surprise. The bed stretched almost to the ceiling! She climbed a tall wooden ladder, step by step, until she disappeared among the blankets.
The castle grew quiet, and rain tapped gently on the windows. But the princess could not sleep a wink. She tossed and turned all night, feeling something hard beneath her back. Her eyes were wide open until dawn.
At breakfast the next morning, the Queen asked kindly, “My dear, did you sleep well?” “Oh, not at all!” sighed the princess. “I lay upon something so hard — my body is black and blue all over!”
The King and Queen exchanged a knowing glance. Only a real princess could feel a tiny pea beneath twenty mattresses! The Queen brought out the small green pea and smiled. “This,” she said, “has proved your royalty.”
The Prince’s face lit up like the morning sun. At last, he had found the true princess he had been searching for! He bowed deeply, his heart full of happiness and hope for their future.
Soon, the palace was filled with music and laughter for their wedding. The Prince and Princess stood hand in hand, celebrated by all. The pea was placed in a crystal box in the royal museum, a tiny reminder of how a true princess was found.
