Once upon a time, there lived an emperor who cared for nothing but fine clothes. He spent all his money on dazzling robes, golden buttons, and shining shoes. He loved to admire himself in front of mirrors.
One morning, the Emperor dreamt of a suit more splendid than any before. 'Something truly unique,' he declared, his eyes sparkling. 'Something only the wisest can see!'
Soon, two clever strangers came to the city, claiming to be master tailors. They bowed low before the Emperor. 'We can weave the finest cloth,' they said, 'so beautiful and magical that only the wise and worthy can see it!'
The Emperor clapped his hands with joy. 'Such a suit will show me who is clever and who is a fool!' he exclaimed. He gave the weavers a large bag of gold and ordered them to begin their work at once.
The weavers set up two great looms and pretended to work from morning till night. They asked for more silk and gold thread, which they secretly hid away. They skillfully moved their hands, weaving invisible fabric.
The Emperor sent his most honest minister to check on the progress. The old man stared and stared at the empty looms. 'Goodness!' he thought, 'Am I a fool? I must not let anyone know!' So he praised the 'magnificent' cloth.
Next, another official visited, praising the cloth even louder. Soon the whole city was talking about the marvelous invisible fabric. At last, the Emperor himself went to see. He opened his eyes wide, yet saw nothing! Still, he nodded wisely and declared the cloth beautiful, awarding the weavers medals.
On the day of the parade, the tricksters pretended to cut and sew the invisible fabric. They lifted their arms, showing invisible sleeves and hems. 'All done!' they announced. 'The suit is light as air; you'll feel as if you’re wearing nothing!'
The emperor undressed and stood before the mirror. The weavers 'helped' him put on the invisible garments, fastening buttons that didn’t exist. The courtiers all bowed and whispered, 'How splendid His Majesty looks!' Then, a grand parade was declared.
The trumpets sounded, and the emperor proudly walked through the city streets. Crowds lined the road, cheering and waving flags. No one dared to say they saw nothing—for who wanted to look foolish? Then a little child’s voice rang out, clear as a bell: 'But he hasn’t got anything on!' The crowd went silent, then laughter spread like wildfire. The Emperor blushed deep red. He knew the child was right, but he lifted his head proudly and walked on, his courtiers still holding up the imaginary train behind him.
