1.A Northern Contest Begins
In the north, two powerful leaders, Yuan Shao and Gongsun Zan, began a big contest for control of the land. Their friends and armies gathered for the challenge near Pan River.
At first, Yuan Shao's friends were overwhelmed by Gongsun Zan's clever moves and found themselves encircled. Yuan Shao was in great trouble, surrounded by his challengers.
Just when things looked dire, Yuan Shao’s brave friends, Yan Liang and Wen Chou, charged forward. They bravely cleared a path, allowing Yuan Shao to move to safety for a moment.
But the danger wasn't over! Yuan Shao found himself in great danger again, nearly caught by the opposing forces. He needed help right away.
Suddenly, an unknown young officer, Zhao Yun, spurred his horse forward. With spectacular courage, he bravely helped Yuan Shao out of his difficult spot, earning gasps of awe.
Yuan Shao, overjoyed by his rescue, asked the young man's name. He learned it was Zhao Yun from Changshan, who was currently with Gongsun Zan's forces. Yuan Shao offered him a place in his own army.
Zhao Yun, seeing that Yuan Shao might not truly recognize his worth, politely declined the offer. He returned to Gongsun Zan's camp, choosing his own path based on his strong principles.
Meanwhile, far to the south, Sun Jian was returning home near the Yangtze River. He carried a very special secret: the Imperial Jade Seal, a treasure he had found and kept hidden.
Governor Liu Biao of Jing Province learned about Sun Jian's secret treasure. Driven by greed, he sent his officer, Huang Zu, to block Sun Jian's path and try to take the seal.
Sun Jian was very upset by this unfair challenge from Liu Biao. He felt his honor was at stake and immediately turned his army to face Liu Biao's forces, ready for a contest.
Near Fancheng, Sun Jian won a decisive challenge against Huang Zu, sending him and his friends retreating towards the city of Xiangyang. Sun Jian eagerly followed them.
During his eager pursuit, Sun Jian bravely faced a surprise attack in a narrow forest path. Though he fought valiantly, he was gravely injured and could no longer lead his friends.
Sun Jian's eldest son, Sun Ce, was filled with sadness and a strong resolve to honor his father's memory. For now, his friends were too few, so he wisely decided to retreat, promising to return one day.
In the capital, Dong Zhuo, a very powerful leader, governed with a very firm hand, holding the Emperor captive. Many people in the court were unhappy with his strict ways.
Grand Minister Wang Yun resolved to bring about change. Knowing that Dong Zhuo’s adopted son, Lü Bu, was the strongest warrior and always by his side, Wang Yun devised a clever and intricate plan.
Wang Yun began his plan by promising his dazzlingly beautiful foster-daughter, Diao Chan, to Lü Bu in marriage. Lü Bu, who already admired her greatly, was absolutely delighted.
However, before the wedding could happen, Wang Yun presented Diao Chan to Dong Zhuo, pretending she was his own daughter. He offered her as a companion to the powerful leader.
Dong Zhuo was completely charmed by Diao Chan’s beauty and grace. He immediately welcomed her into his household, making her a part of his family.
When Lü Bu discovered this unsettling turn of events, he felt very angry and confused. He felt robbed of his promised bride and deeply humiliated by the situation.
Wang Yun, continuing his clever plan, carefully shared different stories with both Lü Bu and Dong Zhuo, making their disagreement grow deeper. He highlighted each man's supposed slights.
Diao Chan, following Wang Yun’s instructions, acted her part perfectly. She felt very sad before Lü Bu, complaining about Dong Zhuo, but acted coolly towards Lü Bu in Dong Zhuo’s presence.
The heated disagreement began at the beautiful Phoenix Pavilion. Lü Bu, learning Diao Chan was there alone, secretly went to comfort her, hoping to resolve their misunderstandings.
Suddenly, Dong Zhuo appeared! Seeing Lü Bu and Diao Chan together, he was filled with fury. In his anger, he threw his spear at Lü Bu, who quickly moved out of the way.
From that moment, the friendship between Dong Zhuo and his adopted son, Lü Bu, was completely broken. The bond they once shared was shattered beyond repair.
Wang Yun’s clever plan had worked! He had successfully created a path for big changes, setting the stage for an important transformation in the story of the kingdom.
